HKP Motors Power Hemodialysis Machines

Hemodialysis

Hemodialysis is a medical procedure used to filter waste, toxins and excess fluids from the blood when the kidneys can no longer perform these functions effectively. The size of the global hemodialysis equipment market is valued at approximately $14.12 billion. According to Fortune Business Insights, Compound Annual Growth Rate (CAGR) for this market is forecasted to be 7.6%.

Hemodialysis machines feature two distinct parts – Blood circuit and Dialysate pathway – and each features HKP motors:

 Blood Circuit

Blood circuit
 Dialysate Pathway

Dialysate pathway

During the treatment process, blood is drawn out of the patient's body, passed through a dialyzer to remove waste and excess water, and then returned to the patient's body. The following pumps, powered by HKP motors, are used in the process.

  1. Blood pump motor powered by an HKP brushless motor, the blood pump initiates the process once blood has been extracting from the patient.
  2. Heparin motor – A Linear Stepper component is used to deliver anticoagulant during treatment.
  3. Air pump – HKP motors drive the pump to remove the air in the dialysate, increase the exchange area of blood and dialysate, remove toxins and water and improve the efficiency of the dialysis process.
  4. Air trap motor – adjusts the levels and pressure of blood flow throughout the process.
  5. Liquid pump motor – This pump, powered by an HKP stepper motor completes the loop by returning fluids to the patient.

HKP Solution

Hemodialysis is a life-sustaining treatment for patients with end-stage kidney disease (ESKD) or acute kidney failure, often allowing them to maintain a functional lifestyle while awaiting a kidney transplant or as a long-term solution.

The requirements for motors used in Hemodialysis applications include:

  1. Customization and Flexibility: Whether an application needs lower duty cycles, lower speeds or continuous duty with high acceleration & deceleration rates, HKP has a range of motors to fit the need.
  2. Durability & Life Expectancy: HKP brush motors last between 2,000 to 5,000 runtime hours, while HKP brushless motors can exceed 10,000 hours of operation.
  3. Noise Generation: Quiet medical equipment helps to calm patients. The pumps used in Hemodialysis machines should be smooth running, and quiet. HKP motors are known for smooth, quiet operation.
