Criteria for Selecting HKP Lead Screw Assemblies

Lead Screws

HKP lead screw assemblies are used in various applications. Kerk Lead Screws are modified Acme thread forms that are optimized for performance. They are available in a broad range of lead screw sizes and nut types.

Kerk lead screws are self-adjusting, maintenance-free and they require no lubrication. These features provide maximum accuracy, high reliability, quiet operation and they result in lower costs.

Below are 10 reasons why Haydon Kerk Motion Solutions’ Lead Screws are a preferred choice for a wide range of applications:

  1. End Machining - Providing a tailored fit: Haydon Kerk can custom machine screws to any specification. HKP can also provide cut-to-length screws for your own machining. Lengths can be specified up to 12 ft. (4M) from stock, (depending on diameter and lead). Cut-to-length screws are offered in 6-in increments (6-in, 12, 18, etc.) +1.0-in/-0-in.
  2. Screw Accuracy: Haydon Kerk uses a unique precision rolling process for screw manufacturing. Standard lead accuracy for Kerk screws is .0006 in./in. (mm/mm). Lead accuracies are available up to .0001 in./in. (mm/mm).
  3. Durability: HKP lead screws support high loads and high speeds. They also provide exceedingly long wear-life over a wide variety of conditions.
  4. A Wide Range of Special Materials: HKP’s nut materials are made of self-lubricating acetal and kerkite High Performance Composite Polymers, which help to reduce the amount of torque required to actuate the plunger. HKP’s custom thread rolling, in-house plastic injection molding and tooling capabilities enable HKP to deliver customized solutions that provide long wear-life over a wide variety of conditions.
  5. Efficiency: or the relationship of work input to work output, is one of the hallmarks of Haydon Kerk’s Lead Screw Assemblies. Kerk lead screws are self-adjusting, maintenance-free and they require no lubrication – resulting in high reliability, quiet operation and low cost operation.
  6. Torque: the motor torque required to drive a lead screw assembly is the sum of three components: the inertial torque, drag torque and torque-to-move load. Kerk Anti-Backlash Assemblies are typically supplied with drag torque of 1 to 7 oz.-in.
  7. Critical Speed: or the rotational speed at which a screw may experience vibration or other dynamic problems, is addressed by using a longer lead, with a larger diameter and/or increased bearing mount support.
  8. Traverse Speed: HKP’s nut materials provide long wear-life over a wide variety of conditions, with both coarse lead for high speed, and fine leads for high resolution.
  9. Maximum Load: Anti-Backlash Assemblies are capable of withstanding exceedingly high loads.
  10. Small Footprint: HKP has brought lead screw rolling and nut molding to a new level of precision with micro-sized parts. Manufactured of premium grade 303 stainless steel, Kerk Micro Series Lead Screw Assemblies are made of self-lubricating acetal and Kerkite® high performance composite polymers, which reduce the torque required to actuate the plunger, leading to reductions in motor size.
The combination of these features – all delivered in a small footprint – is what makes HKP Lead Screw Assemblies a preferred choice for a wide range of applications.
